Starting Groups

Starting Procedures

For safety reasons this year the main K2 and K1 races will have staggered starts. This is to help reduce the build up of large bunches. The separate Elite K2 and Elite K1 races will start, as in previous years, as one group.

Both the K2 and K1 will start with 10 groups of 100 riders at 3 minute intervals with the balance of the field starting together.

For  Group 1 and 2 of the K2  you will need to have achieved a certain time at previous K2 or Taupo to qualify (see below). This is to ensure a matching of ability.

To help you choose the right group we have provided a comparison of K2 times versus Taupo below.

The starting groups will be as follows:

K2

  • 8:00am    Group 1   (riders expecting to finish under 5:45) - Qualifying Times apply (see below)

Timing

  • All riders in the same group will be given the same starting time and results will be based on gun time from that starting time.  So for example Group 1 in the K2 - riders will be given a start time of 8:00am with results based on gun time from 8:00 (not elapsed time). Group 2 results will be based on gun time from 8:03.

Qualifying Times - (K2 - Group 1 and 2)

  • Group 1 (Under 5.45) - To qualify you will need to have either broken the 6 hour mark at K2 or the 4.20 mark at Taupo
  • Group 2 (5.46 - 6.00) -  To qualify you will need to have either broken the 6.15 mark at K2 or the 4.30 mark at Taupo.

Group Allocation

  • Competitors should provide their estimated times and previous best time when entering. Riders will be allocated to groups based on estimated times. The exact time bands for each group may be adjusted up or down depending on demand. The aim will be to have 100 riders in each group.
  • Group allocation and race numbers will be allocated 2 weeks prior to the event. We cannot guarantee late entries a specific group and so if you are keen to ride in a specific group it will be important to enter before the 17th October.
  • It is important that you are not overly optimistic in you time expectation. You will maximise your performance by riding with riders of a similar capability.
