Introduction

Saturday 20th January 2007

Take a ride on the wild side and experience mountain biking like it should be – raw and rugged. The White Star Intrigue is more than just a mountain bike race, it is an adventure on your mountain bike in some of the remotest back country of the Coromandel Peninsula.

This years event has 3 races catering for differing levels of ability and fitness !

The Epic

• 53km – 2 stages (24km and 29km) – Starts in Coromandel township - 1st stage finishes at White Star Station , 2nd stage finishes in Coromandel Township. Can be raced as an individual, tandem team or relay team of 2.

Technically and physically challenging

The Challenge

• 44km – 2 Stages (20km and 24km) – Starts in Coromandel township – 1st stage finishes at White Star Station, 2nd stage finishes in Coromandel township. Can be raced as an individual, tandem team or relay team of 2.

A notch down from the Epic in terms of the technical and physical challenge, however still, like the name suggests, a great challenge.

The Apprentice

• 20km – 1 Stage (Starts and finishes at the White Star Station)

An ideal ride for those wishing to experience a shorter off road race in some stunningly beautiful terrain. This is raced as an individual rider.

All three races are 90% off road and travel through a variety of terrain. Much of the course is on private land and participants will get the chance to ride tracks that are not normally accessible to the general public. The ride is a unique opportunity to discover some of the secret gems of the Coromandel Peninsula including 360% views of the Pacific Ocean and Hauraki Gulf.

Some changes have been made to last years race. We have made the Epic shorter by dropping the 2nd loop from the event. The Challenge has also been made slightly shorter with riders cutting down into the White Star Station from half way along the central ridge line.

This years Apprentice has been completed changed with a start and finish at the White Star station. This makes it logistically easier for riders and supporters.

Quotes from previous winners

“A genuine must do event. The fact I raced this year despite having National XC final the next day stands testament to that! Challenging terrain. Epic views. Great people, atmosphere and organisation. A fantastic, challenging, and rewarding day out."

Mark Leishman - 2005 Winner

“This race is one I rave about to others and rate highly on my list of must dos. Extreme adventure of you and bike versus the environment. A real mountain bike race with tricky single track, daunting hill climbs and knee knocking descents. Add a spoonful of stunning views as you traverse the Coromandel ranges and a shake of Coromandel hospitality and you have the recipe for a perfect day out on your bike”

Sadie Parker-Wynyard - 2003 and 2004 Winner
